One of the best things about living in or visiting San Francisco is how quickly the scenery changes once you leave the city. In a couple of hours you can swap foggy mornings for vineyards, walk under redwoods or find a stretch of California coast where the week feels far behind you.

Whether you're planning a spontaneous road trip, a romantic weekend or a couple of days outdoors, there are plenty of weekend getaways from San Francisco worth the drive. Here are seven to save for the next time you want to get away.

1. Napa Valley, for wine country and a relaxed weekend

If your ideal escape involves good food, vineyards and a slower pace, Napa Valley is the classic choice. It's known for its wineries, tasting rooms and restaurants, but there's more to a weekend here than wine.

Walk around downtown Napa, drive up the valley on Highway 29 or the quieter Silverado Trail, or spend an afternoon in Calistoga, at the top of the valley, which is known for its hot springs and mud baths. If you plan to visit wineries, book tastings in advance and arrange a driver or a tour, so nobody has to drive between stops.

Napa is about an hour to an hour and a half by car. Without one, take the San Francisco Bay Ferry to Vallejo and a VINE bus up to Napa. It suits couples, food lovers and a weekend that marks a special occasion.

2. Sonoma County, for small towns and countryside

Sonoma County gives you wine-country scenery with a more laid-back feel. Its small towns, farm stands, redwood groves and backroads make it easy to build a weekend around whatever you feel like doing.

Healdsburg is a good base, about an hour and a half north of the city. Its central plaza is lined with independent shops, restaurants and tasting rooms. Spend Saturday driving the countryside and leave Sunday for a long brunch or a walk along the Russian River.

It works for couples, friends and anyone who likes an unhurried road trip.

3. Carmel-by-the-Sea, for a coastal town escape

Carmel-by-the-Sea feels made for a slow weekend. It's a village of cottages, art galleries and small cafés, with a white-sand beach where you can take a long walk without much of a plan.

Browse the village streets, watch the sunset from Carmel Beach, or drive ten minutes south to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve for its coves and cliff-top trails. It's about two and a half hours from San Francisco.

If you have an extra day, add Monterey, next door, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Carmel is a good pick for a romantic weekend, for photographers and for anyone who wants the coast.

4. Big Sur, for one of California's most scenic drives

Few California road trips match the drive down Highway 1 through Big Sur. Cliffs drop straight into the Pacific, the road winds from one viewpoint to the next, and you'll stop more often than you planned.

Bixby Creek Bridge is about two and a half hours from San Francisco, through Carmel. Rather than trying to cover the whole coast, pick a few stops, such as Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park or McWay Falls, and leave time to take in the view.

Treat Big Sur as a road trip. Landslides close parts of Highway 1 from time to time, so check Caltrans road conditions before you leave, and confirm that the viewpoints and trails you want are open. It's for nature lovers, photographers and anyone who wants a drive they'll remember.

5. Half Moon Bay, for an easy coastal reset

Not every weekend needs a long drive. Half Moon Bay is about 45 minutes from the city, so you can leave San Francisco behind without spending hours on the road.

Walk or cycle the Coastside Trail along the bluffs, stop at farm stands when they're in season, or find a café for a slow lunch. The beaches nearby have big ocean views, but it's often windy and the water is cold.

It's a good choice for one night away, or a weekend you decide on that morning.

6. Mendocino, for rugged coastline and a quiet village

If your idea of a good weekend is sea air, cliffs and a slow pace, Mendocino is worth the longer drive north, about three and a half hours.

The village has old wooden buildings, independent galleries and paths along the ocean in Mendocino Headlands State Park. You can also visit the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, on the way to Fort Bragg.

Mendocino isn't a place for a packed sightseeing list. Give yourself time to wander, stop for coffee and watch the waves from the headlands. It suits a quiet weekend, couples and people who like being outdoors.

7. Lake Tahoe, for mountain views and outdoor weekends

When you want a complete change of scenery, go to Lake Tahoe. It's surrounded by mountains and known for its clear water, and each season brings a different kind of trip.

Summer is for hiking, kayaking and lying by the lake. Winter brings skiing and snowboarding. Emerald Bay is the classic viewpoint, and the towns around the shore make it easy to plan a trip around the outdoors or simply the view.

Tahoe is about three and a half to four hours by car, longer on a Friday evening or in snow. Amtrak's California Zephyr runs from Emeryville to Truckee, near the north shore. In winter, check the mountain weather and chain controls before you go. It's best for outdoor lovers, groups of friends and long weekends.

When is the best time for weekend trips from San Francisco?

It depends on the kind of weekend you want. Spring is good for countryside drives and wildflowers. Summer is popular for the coast, hiking and the lake. Autumn is harvest season in wine country and often brings the clearest days on the coast. Winter suits a spa weekend in Calistoga or a snow trip to Lake Tahoe.

Coastal weather changes fast, so bring layers even when the forecast looks sunny. For a longer road trip, check road closures before you set out.
