Mumbai has more weekend options than most cities, and many of them don't need a car. The Central line runs out to Karjat and Kasara, the Western line goes up the coast to Dahanu, and a ferry from south Mumbai gets you to the Alibaug side in about an hour. The hard part is choosing, and then getting your friends to agree on a weekend.

Here are eight weekend getaways from Mumbai that work for two days, with road distances and drive times, how to get there without a car, what each place is good for and when to go. There's a section on winter at the end, since November to February is when several of these are at their best.

Road distances are from south and central Mumbai, checked on OpenStreetMap routing, and change by 10 to 20 km depending on where you start. Weekend traffic, especially on monsoon Saturdays, can add an hour or more.

1. Lonavala and Khandala, for an easy first trip

Lonavala is the first weekend trip for a lot of people in Mumbai. It's about 85 to 90 km away, and the drive on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway takes around 1.5 to 2 hours without heavy traffic. There's no suburban local from Mumbai to Lonavala, but express trains from CSMT stop there. The Deccan Queen leaves CSMT at 5:10 pm and reaches Lonavala at 7:18 pm, so you can leave after work on Friday.

Spend a day on the older sights. The Karla and Bhaja caves are Buddhist rock-cut caves, the oldest parts dating to around the 2nd century BC. Lohagad Fort is a popular climb, and Pawna Dam is about 14 km from Lonavala. Khandala, the hill station next door, works as a second base if Lonavala feels crowded.

In the monsoon, check the rules before you go. In 2024, after a family drowned in a waterfall near Bhushi Dam, the Pune administration restricted access above the dam and at several viewpoints. In 2026 the district collector issued a new order on 6 July covering Karla, Bhaja, Lohagad, Tiger Point and Pawna Dam, then revoked it in mid-July. Rules can change from one week to the next in the rains.

It suits first-timers, groups of friends and anyone without a car. If you're coming from Pune instead, see our weekend getaways from Pune.

2. Karjat, for a villa weekend and easy treks

Karjat is the closest getaway on this list, about 70 km by road and around two hours' drive. By train, fast locals from CSMT to Karjat take just under two hours for the 98 km. That makes it the easiest place to get a group out of the city on a Saturday morning.

Many people book a villa or farm stay for the weekend and add one short outing. The Kondana caves, about 14 km from Karjat station, are Buddhist rock-cut caves from around the 1st century BC, roughly 45 minutes to an hour's walk from the base. We found no current access restrictions for the caves, but in the monsoon ask your stay whether the trail is safe. Peth Fort, also called Kothaligad, is a longer trek through forest to steps cut into the rock. Bhivpuri waterfall is at its fullest in the monsoon.

Monsoon is Karjat's busy season, and waterfalls in the area can rise fast. On 5 July 2026, police had to evacuate 10 to 12 tourists from Adoshi waterfall near Khopoli after a sudden rise in water, then posted staff to keep visitors back. Ask your stay which spots are open. October to February is cooler and better for treks.

It suits groups of friends, families and anyone who wants a short drive.

3. Matheran, for a weekend without cars

Matheran is a hill station at about 800 m where cars aren't allowed. The area was declared an eco-sensitive zone in 2003, and motor vehicles stop at the Dasturi car park. From there you walk about 40 to 50 minutes into town, ride a horse, or take one of the e-rickshaws that have been allowed since December 2022. In August 2025, the Supreme Court ordered the state to replace hand-pulled rickshaws with e-rickshaws within six months.

Without a car, take a local from CSMT to Neral, about an hour and 40 minutes on a fast local. From Neral, the narrow-gauge toy train climbs about 20 km to Matheran, or a shared taxi takes you to Dasturi in about 20 minutes.

The full Neral to Matheran toy train stops every monsoon. In 2026, Central Railway suspended it until 15 October, while the shuttle between Aman Lodge and Matheran kept running. When we checked on 21 October, we couldn't find a notice of this season's restart. Last year the full route came back on 6 November 2025, three weeks after its planned date, with two trains a day from each end. Check Central Railway's notices before you plan around it; the shared taxis run either way.

It suits couples, walkers and anyone who wants a quiet weekend.

4. Alibaug, for beaches you can reach by ferry

Alibaug is the beach weekend most people in Mumbai can do without a car. Catamarans and launches run from the Gateway of India to Mandwa jetty, and the M2M Ro-Pax ferry runs from Ferry Wharf (Bhaucha Dhakka) to Mandwa and carries cars and bikes. The crossing takes about 45 minutes to an hour. From Mandwa, buses timed to the ferries cover the roughly 20 km to Alibaug town.

The Gateway boats stop for the monsoon, and this year they were back in September. M2M is meant to run all year, but sailings can be cancelled in rough weather and its timetable changes often, so check the times on the M2M app or website before you go. By road it's about 90 to 100 km, and the Atal Setu route has cut the drive to about 2 to 2.5 hours, compared with 3 to 3.5 hours via Panvel.

Stay near one of the beaches around Alibaug town. At low tide you can wade out through waist-deep water to Kolaba Fort, a 17th-century sea fort about 1 to 2 km off the shore; at high tide you need a boat. Check the tide times before you set off.

It suits couples, families and a first beach trip without a car. For Kashid, Murud-Janjira, Diveagar and the rest of the Raigad coast, see our guide to the best weekend getaways in Konkan.

5. Igatpuri, for monsoon valleys and dams

Igatpuri sits at the top of the Kasara ghat, about 120 to 135 km from Mumbai, and the drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Several express trains stop there. The Panchavati Express leaves CSMT at 6:15 pm and reaches Igatpuri at about 8:50 pm. You can also take a local to Kasara, about 2 hours 15 minutes, then a shared taxi for the 18 km up the ghat.

The weekend here is about the landscape. Drive the loop past Bhavali Dam, the Vaitarna dam wall and the Camel Valley viewpoint, and take an auto to the base of Tringalwadi Fort if you want a trek. Igatpuri is also home to Dhamma Giri, the well-known Vipassana centre, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station.

The drive and the valleys are at their best from July to November, when the ghats are green and the waterfalls are running.

It suits monsoon lovers, photographers and people who like a slow drive.

6. Nashik vineyards, for a wine weekend

Nashik is the furthest drive on this list after Mahabaleshwar, about 165 to 185 km and around four hours from Mumbai. Since June 2025, the Samruddhi Mahamarg has cut the Thane to Nashik drive to about 2 to 2.5 hours. By train, the Panchavati Express reaches Nashik Road about 3 hours 20 minutes after leaving CSMT, and you'll need a cab from there.

Base yourself near Gangapur, where Sula, York and Soma are. Sula, at Govardhan on the Gangapur-Savargaon road, runs tours and tastings every hour on a first come, first served basis; at weekends registration opens at 10 am. York and Soma Vine Village are a short drive away. If you're visiting more than one winery, book a cab for the day or pick a driver who won't be tasting.

November to February is the best time for tastings. The grape harvest and grape stomping run roughly from January to March. SulaFest, Sula's music and wine festival, has been held over a weekend in late January or early February; the 2026 edition was on 31 January and 1 February. Dates for 2027 hadn't been announced when we wrote this, so check Sula's site before you plan around it.

It suits couples, groups of friends and food lovers.

7. Dahanu and Bordi, for a quiet beach up the coast

Dahanu and Bordi work well when Alibaug feels too busy. Bordi is about 145 to 165 km by road, depending on where in Mumbai you start, a drive of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. Fast locals run all the way from Churchgate to Dahanu Road, 122 km, in just under 3 hours. Bordi beach is about 2.8 km from Gholvad station and about 17 km by road from Dahanu Road.

Bordi's beach is long, with casuarina trees to walk under. The water is shallow, fine for splashing about but not deep enough for a proper swim. Behind the beach are the chikoo orchards of Gholvad, and you can walk through them. Gholvad also has old houses built by wealthy Irani families, and some local stays serve Parsi food if you order a few hours ahead.

Maharashtra Tourism suggests October to March, when it's cool. The Chikoo Festival is usually held in Bordi over a weekend in February, with food stalls, farm visits and chikoo ice cream, chips and sweets; the 2025 edition was on 8 and 9 February. Dates for 2027 hadn't been announced when we wrote this, so check the festival's site, chikoofestival.com. In the monsoon the sea gets rough.

It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a slow weekend by the sea.

8. Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani, for strawberries and viewpoints

Mahabaleshwar is the long one. It's about 215 to 270 km from Mumbai, depending on whether you take the Mumbai-Goa highway and climb the ghat from Poladpur, or go via Pune and Wai. Allow five to six hours either way, so it works best if you leave on Friday night or take a long weekend. There's no railway station; state-run and private buses go from Mumbai, and the nearest stations are Satara and Wathar.

Coming via Wai, Panchgani is about 20 km before Mahabaleshwar, and most people do both. Take a boat out on Venna Lake, drive about 20 km to Pratapgad Fort, and in season visit one of the farms that let you walk the rows and pick strawberries.

Strawberry season runs roughly from December to April, which makes this the best winter trip on the list. The monsoon brings heavy rain and thick mist that can hide the views for days.

It suits couples, families and anyone with a long weekend. It's much closer from Pune; see our weekend getaways from Pune for more around Satara and the ghats.

Weekend getaways from Mumbai in winter (November to February)

Winter is when Mumbai's getaways are easiest. The Gateway ferries to Mandwa are running, the treks are cooler and the roads are clear of monsoon jams. If you're planning a trip between November and February, these work best:

  • Nashik vineyards for the tasting season, with the harvest from January and, in most years, SulaFest in late January or early February.
  • Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani for strawberries from December onwards and cool evenings.
  • Dahanu and Bordi for the beach in its best months, and the Chikoo Festival in February.
  • Alibaug for a beach weekend by ferry, outside the monsoon break.
  • Matheran for walks in the forest, once the full toy train is back after the monsoon break.

Lonavala and Karjat are fine all winter for forts and treks, but Igatpuri is at its most interesting in the rains.

Whatever the season, check the weather and any local orders before you set off. In the monsoon, district administrations have repeatedly closed waterfalls and dams at short notice.

Plan your next weekend from Mumbai with Weekend

You've probably saved a few of these already. A Lonavala waterfall reel, a Karjat villa someone posted, an Alibaug vlog a friend sent to the group chat. Then the long weekend comes and nobody can find them.

That's why we built Weekend. Share an Instagram reel or a YouTube video with the app, and it finds every place the video mentions, checks each one on Google Maps and saves them on your map, with the creator's tips and the moment in the video where each place appears. When you're ready, send the plan to your friends. They vote without installing anything, and you pick a weekend that works. See how it works.

Going with a group? Here's how to plan a group trip with friends so it actually happens. Your next weekend might already be in your feed, too. Read why your next weekend might already be in your saved reels, or see our guides to weekend getaways from Pune and the Konkan coast.
