Goa in December 2026: a practical guide for a weekend with friends
What December is like, what is actually on this year, where to stay and how to get there without paying Christmas Eve prices.

December is the month most groups pick for Goa. The rain is long gone, the shacks are back on the beach, and between Christmas and New Year it can feel like half the country has had the same idea. That last part is worth planning around.
This guide is for a two or three day trip with friends in December 2026. It covers the weather, the events confirmed for this year (and the ones not announced yet), north versus south, getting there, a sample plan, what costs more around Christmas, and the local rules that catch visitors out.
| Part of December | Weather | Crowds and prices | What's on in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 12 Dec | Dry and warm, highs around 33°C | Busy but manageable | Feast of St Francis Xavier, Old Goa, 3 Dec |
| 13 to 23 Dec | Dry and warm | Filling up; in 2025 flight fares peaked just before Christmas | Serendipity Arts Festival, Panjim, 13 to 20 Dec |
| 24 Dec to 1 Jan | Dry and warm | The busiest and most expensive stretch, with heavy traffic on the north coast | Christmas midnight services on 24 Dec, New Year's Eve on 31 Dec |
Weather figures are long-term averages for Panaji, not a forecast for 2026.
What Goa is like in December
December is dry season. Long-term averages for Panaji put daytime highs at about 33°C and nights at about 21°C, with around 14 mm of rain for the whole month and about 10 hours of sunshine a day. The sea is warm, around 28°C, and the beach towns in the north, from Candolim to Morjim, follow the same pattern. Afternoons are hot and the UV index is very high, so plan beaches for the morning and late afternoon.
The crowds build through the month, and the week between Christmas and New Year is the one to think hard about. On New Year's Eve 2025, traffic on the Candolim, Calangute and Baga stretch and around Anjuna and Vagator was bumper to bumper from the evening, and police closed the road from Bharat Junction to Tito's Circle in Baga to vehicles from 3 pm to 6 am. The advisory for 2026 isn't out yet; last year's came on 31 December. If your group wants beaches and long lunches rather than a party, the first three weeks of December are easier.
What's on in Goa in December 2026

These are the events we could confirm for this year, with dates.
- Feast of St Francis Xavier, Old Goa, Thursday 3 December. The feast falls on 3 December every year at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the saint's remains. In 2025 the novena ran from 24 November, and the feast day had Masses from 3:45 am, with the solemn High Mass at 10:30 am. The 2026 schedule hadn't been published when we checked in October; last year's came out in November. In past years police have set up diversions and special parking around Old Goa for the feast.
- Serendipity Arts Festival, Panjim, 13 to 20 December. The 11th edition runs across several venues in Panjim, covering visual arts, music, theatre, dance, craft and food. Public access is free. The programme and venue list weren't out when we checked, so look at the festival site closer to the date.
- Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December. Midnight services are the reason to be in Panjim or Old Goa that night. In 2025, services in every parish began shortly before midnight, and the Cardinal led the service at the Se Cathedral in Old Goa. Each parish announces its own 2026 timings, so check with the Immaculate Conception church or the Se Cathedral before you go, and arrive early.
- New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December. The north coast is at its busiest. Loudspeakers are allowed until midnight only with permission (see the rules below), so outdoor music after midnight isn't covered.
A few things that are not in Goa this December, or not confirmed:
- Sunburn is not in Goa. The festival, long held in Goa in December, has moved to Mumbai. The 2026 edition is at Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai on 18 and 19 December.
- IFFI ends before December. The 57th International Film Festival of India runs in Goa from 20 to 28 November 2026.
- New Year's Eve parties and line-ups at clubs and beach venues weren't announced when we checked. Book only with venues that publish their permissions and timings.
North or South Goa: where to base yourself

For a short trip, pick one side and stay there. Driving from one end of the coast to the other takes hours, and you don't want to spend a two-day weekend in a taxi.
North Goa suits most groups of friends. It has more cafés, bars, markets and nightlife, and Panjim, Fontainhas and Old Goa are close enough for a day of something other than beaches. Baga and Calangute are the busiest and most commercial. Anjuna and Vagator are livelier at night. Morjim, Ashwem and Mandrem are quieter. Assagao and Siolim are popular for villa stays.
South Goa is quieter and slower, with fewer bars and more beach huts. Palolem is the busiest beach in the south; Agonda and Patnem are calmer. It suits a group that wants to read, swim and eat well, and it's an easier place to be between Christmas and New Year.
If you've done Goa before and want a different stretch of coast, the Konkan beaches in Maharashtra are worth a look. See our guide to the best weekend getaways in Konkan.
Getting to Goa: Mopa or Dabolim, train or bus
By air. Goa has two airports. Manohar International at Mopa (GOX), in Pernem taluka in the far north, is about 35 km from Panaji and the nearer airport for the north coast. Dabolim (GOI), near Vasco, is about 30 km from Panaji and 23 km from Margao, so it's more convenient for South Goa. Check which one your flight uses before you book a cab.
From Mopa, Kadamba, the state transport corporation, runs AC airport shuttles. Its published fares are Rs 150 to Mapusa, Rs 200 to Calangute Beach, Rs 200 to Panaji and Rs 400 to Margao per person. Timings change, so check them with Kadamba before you rely on the bus.
By train. The Konkan Railway runs through Goa. Thivim, about 21 km from Panjim, is the station for the far north beaches such as Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim and Arambol. Karmali, about 12 km from Panjim and close to Old Goa, works for Candolim, Calangute and Baga. Madgaon is the main station for South Goa. From Mumbai, the Vande Bharat Express takes about 8 hours and the Konkan Kanya Express runs overnight. Book as soon as your dates are fixed.
By bus. Overnight buses take about 12 to 14 hours from Mumbai, 10 to 12 hours from Pune and 12 to 14 hours from Bengaluru. Most stop at Mapusa for the north, at Panjim, or at Margao for the south. Confirm the drop point when you book.
A 2-day and 3-day plan

This assumes a North Goa base and a Friday night arrival, by overnight bus, train or flight.
Day 1: beaches in the north. Start early at a quieter beach such as Morjim or Ashwem, before the heat. Have a long lunch, rest through the hottest part of the afternoon, and head to Anjuna or Vagator for sunset. On a Saturday, the night market at Arpora is an option; it has run on winter Saturdays in past seasons, so check it's on this year before you plan around it.
Day 2: Panjim and Old Goa. Spend the morning walking through Fontainhas, Panjim's old Latin quarter, with its painted houses and the Chapel of St Sebastian, built in 1818. Then drive out to Old Goa, where the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If your trip falls between 13 and 20 December, spend the evening at Serendipity events in Panjim.

Day 3, if you have it: south for a day, or slow down. Either drive south to Palolem or Agonda for a beach day, which is a long round trip from the north, or keep it simple with a lazy morning and a late lunch near your stay before heading back.
If you're there on 24 December, swap Day 2 for an afternoon in Panjim and the midnight service at the Immaculate Conception church.
Goa in December on a budget
We aren't giving a total trip cost, because it depends too much on where you're coming from and which nights you pick. These are the costs that move most in December, with the numbers we could source.
- Flights peak before Christmas, not on New Year's Eve. In December 2025, a one-way Bengaluru to Goa fare was as low as about Rs 3,500 on some days but reached about Rs 6,765 on 24 December. Delhi to Goa peaked at about Rs 8,834 that day. On 31 December itself, Bengaluru and Mumbai fares were back to about Rs 3,500, though Bengaluru fares jumped again on 30 December. If you're flexible, compare a few days either side before you book.
- Rooms roughly double around New Year's Eve. In 2024, one resort near Mopa usually charged Rs 6,000 to 7,000 a night in December and about Rs 13,000 on New Year's Eve. The nights from 28 to 31 December are the ones to lock in early, or avoid.
- Buses cost more at peak too. From Mumbai, listed fares run about Rs 600 to 900 for a non-AC seater and Rs 1,500 to 2,500 for an AC sleeper, and peak weekends and festivals can add 50 to 100 percent.
- The easiest saving is your dates. The first half of December has the same weather as the last week, with smaller crowds.
For a group, agree on a budget per person before anyone books, book the stay first, and split costs early. Our guide to planning a group trip with friends covers how to get everyone to agree.
Rules worth knowing before you go
Drinking in the open. Drinking on beaches and in other public places is an offence in Goa, and so is leaving bottles behind. In the three years up to early 2025, police booked 792 cases of drinking in public. In August 2025 the state assembly passed an amendment to the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act that lists drinking in unauthorised areas, breaking glass bottles, littering and cooking in the open as nuisances, with fines from Rs 5,000 up to Rs 1 lakh. Drink at a shack or bar, not on the sand.
Music after 10 pm. Outdoor music after 10 pm needs permission. For 2026, the state allows loudspeakers until midnight on 24 and 25 December and on each night from 26 to 31 December, but only with permission granted case by case. If you're renting a villa, don't plan an outdoor party past 10 pm.
Renting a scooter. Rent from a licensed operator. Rental scooters and cars carry black number plates; a private vehicle has a white one. Private vehicles rented out to tourists can be impounded, and in 2025 the transport department set a Rs 10,000 fine for them. You need a valid driving licence. Since March 2024, rental customers sign an undertaking to follow traffic rules. The fines listed with it (2024) include Rs 1,000 and a three-month licence disqualification for riding without a helmet, the same for triple riding, Rs 5,000 for letting someone without a licence ride, and Rs 10,000 and/or up to six months in jail for drunk riding. Don't ride on the beach. Keep your licence with you rather than leaving it with the rental owner.
Plan your Goa weekend with Weekend
You've probably saved a few Goa videos already. A shack in Morjim someone posted, a Fontainhas café from a reel, a South Goa vlog a friend sent to the group chat. Then December comes and nobody can find them.
That's why we built Weekend. Share an Instagram reel or a YouTube video with the app, and it finds every place the video mentions, checks each one on Google Maps and saves them on your map, with the creator's tips and the moment in the video where each place appears. When you're ready, send the plan to your friends. They vote without installing anything, and you pick a weekend that works. See how it works.
Your Goa weekend might already be in your feed. Read why your next weekend might already be in your saved reels, see how to plan a group trip with friends, or try a different coast with our Konkan getaways.
FAQ
What's on for Christmas in Goa in 2026?
Christmas Eve is Thursday 24 December. Every parish holds a midnight service, including Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panjim and the Se Cathedral in Old Goa. In 2025 the services began shortly before midnight; check the 2026 timings with the parish. Loudspeakers are allowed until midnight on 24 and 25 December, with permission. The Serendipity Arts Festival ends a few days earlier, on 20 December.
How much does a Goa trip in December cost?
It depends mostly on your dates. In December 2025 flights cost the most around Christmas Eve: a Bengaluru to Goa fare was about Rs 3,500 on some days and about Rs 6,765 on 24 December. Room rates have peaked around New Year's Eve. Going in the first half of the month is the simplest way to keep costs down.
Is it worth going to Goa at the end of December?
Yes, if your group wants to be there for Christmas or New Year and accepts the crowds. Book rooms and transport early and expect slow traffic on the north coast. On New Year's Eve 2025, police closed the road to Tito's in Baga to vehicles from 3 pm, and the beach roads were gridlocked from the evening. For a quieter trip, go before 20 December or stay in South Goa.
How do we plan a Goa trip with friends on a budget?
Pick dates outside 23 to 31 December, travel by overnight train or bus, stay together in one villa or guesthouse in one part of Goa, and use buses and shared scooters to get around. Agree on a budget per person before anyone books.
